 Spaghnum Moss for Phalaenopsis
- Saturday, March 13, 2004 12:41 am -
Media is a vital component for plants, where they could absorb the nutrition to support its lives. There are several reasons in using Spaghnum moss as the media for the Phalaenopsis in Tropical area. Of course mainly this was subjected to the regional climate condition, which is usually hot, and a high evaporation. Several typical reason in using Spaghnum Moss as the media for Phalaenopsis are:
1. It could keep water for a longer time, so that the humidity could be controlled stable. This is very important for Phalaenopsis where they need a high humidity
2. Beside the capability in absorbing & keeping water, it is also able to hold the fertilizer in a longer period of time, therefore could decrease the number of nutrition decrement by the hot climate in tropical area
3. The frequencies of watering & fertilizing could be reduced because of the reason mentioned at 2 point before. And we could save more time and cost
4. Phalaenopsis’s roots are prone to over-humidity. While this media will bring a better air circulation for the plants, because of the space between them
5. For some country like America, Canada, Phalaenopsis are often required to be sent in bare-root condition, and using this Spaghnum moss will ease the job to take off the media from the root. It will also help in taking care the cleannes of the roots
